About the Festival

Since the year 2000, the Uruguayan Film School (ECU) organizes the International Film Schools Festival (FIEC), the only space in Uruguay dedicated exclusively to the exhibition of the best works from professional audiovisual training centers at local, regional and international level. In the past 16 years, the FIEC has gathered works from more than 80 film schools from all over the world, adding in each edition new institutions and countries.

Its mission is, in the first place, to allow public access (with free entry) to a type of non-commercial production that usually has no diffusion beyond the academic field. Secondly, to maintain a direct link with other training centers in the country and abroad through the dissemination of their best works, encouraging the exchange of different experiences in audiovisual training and film production, both among students and between teachers, professionals and the audience.

The FIEC is held every year in August, during four days in which a selection of student short films (fiction, documentary and animation) is exhibited. An international jury chooses the best works in each category, including the best Uruguayan short film. And since 2014 there is also a student jury (composed by representatives of three public and private audiovisual training institutions) that selects its own awards. At the same time, workshops, round tables and conferences by filmmakers, producers, academics and industry professionals, both local and foreign, are held for students and graduates of all audiovisual training centers in the country.

During the four days of the festival, Sala Pocitos of Cinemateca Uruguaya becomes a true meeting point for film and audiovisual students, filmmakers, producers, friends and the public in general, where cinema and, above all, the future of young filmmakers (who are showing their first works) are celebrated.
